UPDATE 10/19/13: Diet #1 is complete!
UPDATE #2 12/03/13: After much unfortunate delay, the Paleo results have been posted below

Paleo in a Nutshell

The Paleolithic diet consists of foods that can be hunted and fished, such as meat, offal, and seafood, and foods that can be gathered, such as eggs, insects, fruit, nuts, seeds, vegetables, mushrooms, herbs, and spices. Some sources advise eating only lean cuts of meat, free of food additives, preferably wild game meats and grass-fed beef since they contain higher levels of omega-3 fats compared with grain-produced domestic meats. Food groups that advocates claim were rarely or never consumed by humans before the Neolithic (agricultural) revolution are excluded from the diet, mainly grains, legumes (e.g. beans and peanuts), dairy products, salt, refined sugar and processed oils, although some advocates consider the use of oils with low omega-6/omega-3 ratios, such as olive oil and canola oil, to be healthy and advisable.

Paleo Specifics for the APOE Experiment

The macronutrient ratios I’ll be following for the paleo diet are:

Carbohydrates
10%
Fat
65%
Protein
25%

These ratios are firmly in the low-carb Paleo camp, and put it closer to something Dr. Attia might suggest than the growing majority of Paleo/Primal people today, who’ve become way more moderate on the idea of “safe starches”, like potatoes. My choice to go this route with the macros is for a few reasons:

  1. I think something towards the more orthodox/extreme/historical side of the framework works better for an experiment than something more moderate.
  2. It’s closer in line to how I ate during the years that I was 80/20 paleo.

As for all the diets, I’ll be following my primary rules first and foremost. It almost goes without saying that I won’t be eating any gluten, or grains of any sort, nor will I be eating any legumes. I won’t be eating any dairy, and artificial sweeteners will be kept to pure stevia and the most basic sugar alcohols (xylitol, sorbitol, and erythritol.) To keep the carbs under 10%, any actual sugar will come from the very occasional fruit or 90% chocolate.

I’ll be eating one to three eggs a day. since this is the diet where ingested cholesterol most comes into play, I want to keep my daily intake as consistent as possible, and will use the eggs to balance things out, if need be,

I’ll do my best to keep the saturated/monounsaturated ratio at around 75/25, and limit polyunsaturated fat intake as much as possible. I’ll stick mostly to ruminant meat for protein. I may intentionally do a teaspoon of fish oil each day.

Notes on the Test Results

  1. Eating a 100% low-carb, high-fat, moderate protein paleo diet, with all fat coming from either extra-virgin coconut oil, grass-fed ruminant meat, or eggs drove my total and LDL-C/LDL-P numbers higher than they’ve ever been before.
  2. HDL-C is the same as it was in April (80% Paleo)
  3. HDL-C was higher in August and September (random/SAD diet)
  4. Triglycerides are higher than ever before, despite eating a lower amount of carbs than ever before.
  5. LDL and HDL particle sizes are virtually unchanged across all tests to date.
  6. I pushed a metabolic panel number into the red zone for the first time (BUN/Creatinine Ratio), which isn’t surprising considering the amount of protein consumed.

No sorry that is your version of what you think is a Paleo Diet I would suggest you read Lorain Cordain`s book The Paleo Diet and actually see an example of what consists as the diet as he is a researcher with more credibility than the likely modern imitators of what they think the diet is.

    • Hey Paul, thanks for visiting. I’m familiar with Dr. Cordain’s and his original implementation of paleo. He basically kicked the whole Paleo movement off when he published his book a decade ago, but as we both know people have been modifying and tweaking it ever since. I think the low-carb version I fell into several years ago and tried to replicate in the first phase of this experiment stays pretty close to his original version, with the exceptions of a reduction in fruits, and the inclusion of some potatoes.

I should also point out that I’m really experimenting with macronutrient ratios more than I’m experimenting with various implementations of diet. Therefore, as long as I stay as close as possible to the ratios while respecting the overall framework of the particular diet, I think I’ll be achieving my goal.

This is quite frustrating, as I love the idea of your blog, but this is not a fair representation of an intelligently planned Paleo diet. I see no offal/gelatinous foods at all. The muscle meat, eggs, and fish are quite high in methionine and need to be balanced with glycine rich foods. Muscle meats are relatively deficient in many nutrients, such as folate, Vitamin A, and various B vitamins.

This diet is also quite imbalanced in terms of the Omega 6/ Omega 3 ratio. Between the guacamole, the cashew nuts, the squash seeds, you are awash in Omega 6. Where the heck are the Omega 3 fatty acids??

This is a good place to get a handle on this:
    http://blog.cholesterol-and-health.com/2011/03/anyone-doing-paleo-without-liver-bones.html

I strongly suggest that you try again after reading up on some more. One of the things to keep in mind is that your cholesterol numbers are likely to go up if you are deficient in certain nutrients, because you need to be nutrient-replete in order to to make good use of cholesterol. It needs co-factors in order to be synthesized into other beneficial things, like steroid hormones. Thanks for reading, and best of health to you!

Really appreciate the work you’re doing and hope it is still ongoing! I’m 3/4 and trying to get a handle on what is best for me.

I do agree with others in that improving your Omega 3/6 levels will likely modify your results.

Also, to help keep the calcium out of your arteries, you might want to look into a K2 (not K1) supplement or nutrition source.
